The sixty-second session of the Commission on the Status of Women will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 12 to 23 March 2018. The priority theme will be: Challenges and opportunities in achieving gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls;
Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world are invited to attend the session.
Farming First is partnering with the International Agri-Food Network to host “Agriculture and Food Day to Implement the Sustainable Development Goals”, which will be held at the Yale Club in New York City. The event will raise awareness of the critical need for investment in Goal 2 on ending hunger and its interlinkages with the other SDGs under focus during the High Level Political Forum being held at the United Nations in New York the same week.
The day will include a thematically-focused plenary session, a series of roundtable discussions on interlinkages in SDGs, and a dynamic luncheon featuring youth in agriculture.
Farming First is joining forces with the International Coalition for Advocating Nutrition (ICAN) and WaterAid to hold a side event on how the water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), nutrition and agricultural sectors can partner to deliver a comprehensive Post 2015 Development Framework and explore the feasibility of collaborative implementation, monitoring, and measurement of progress. Agriculture should be central to the post-2015 development process and the formulation of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Supportive policies are needed to encourage investments in agriculture and innovation that lead to food security, economic development, rural employment and national security. The intersection of food security with development is not only an immediate measure of hungry mouths, but also the long term implications on a country’s well being.
The luncheon will be organized in eight roundtables dealing with the proposed Post 2015 topics and have a roundtable discussion on the key metrics for that goal. Facilitators and rapporteurs will be assigned to each table to guide and record the specific discussion points which arise.

At a recent Farming First conference in New York, Dr. Lindiwe Sibanda explained how supporting small-scale farmers with $100 worth of agricultural inputs and training can help them to improve their livelihoods more than $1000 worth of equivalent food aid.
Dr. Sibanda is CEO of the Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN), a Southern African network organisation with representation in 12 Southern African countries.
