Ruben G. Echeverría: Pioneering a Big Data Revolution in Agriculture

In this guest post, Ruben Echeverría, director general of the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), with headquarters in Colombia, describes early steps in the application of big data analytics to smallholder agriculture and calls for further action to promote this work on a large scale. 

Who would have thought that an obscure climate database would someday achieve science superstar status and help pave the way for a big-data revolution in tropical agriculture? As unlikely as it may seem, this was the destiny of a geek tool called WorldClim. Its story offers important lessons on the value of big data analytics and open-data policies for science-based innovation. And these lessons, in turn, should serve as a call to action for farmers, researchers, policymakers, and others committed to sustainable agricultural development.  Continue reading

#FoodPrize15 Twitter Chat Summary

To gear up for the Borlaug Dialogue in Des Moines next week – where Farming First will be acting as media partner to hosts the World Food Prize Foundation – we ran a Twitter Chat with leading spokespeople at the event and Farming First supporters.

Ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn, President of the World Food Prize Foundation kicked the discussion off with reasons why agriculture is such an important tool for poverty reduction.

Ambassador Quinn was joined by the Director of Agricultural Development at the Gates Foundation, Pamela Anderson. She had this response to why the empowerment of youth and women in agriculture can make such a big impact:

Winner of the 2015 World Food Prize, BRAC also joined the debate. When asked how we can ensure technologies end up in the hand of farmers, they introduced the idea of “frugal innovation”.

Farming First supporters Dr. Katrin Glatzel of Agriculture for Impact, and Jay Kaufman of Fintrac also joined the discussion. They shared their ideas on how to ensure that development interventions are holistic and tackle more than one area of development.

Sir Fazle Hasan Abed wins World Food Prize

Sir Fazle Hasan Abed of Bangladesh, social enterprise visionary and founder of BRAC was announced yesterday as the 2015 winner of the World Food Prize, the most prominent global award for individuals whose breakthrough achievements alleviate hunger and promote global food security.

The World Food Prize Foundation – with whom Farming First partnering to make the announcement public – is awarding the $250,000 prize to Sir Fazle for the progress he has made in improving people’s lives, alleviating hunger, and providing pathways out of poverty for up to 150 million people across Africa, Asia and the Pacific.

Screen Shot 2015-07-01 at 18.40.25BRAC, which was formally known as Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee, has been hailed as the most effective anti-poverty organization in the world. Today BRAC operates 18 financially and socially profitable enterprises, across health, agriculture, livestock, fisheries, education, green energy, printing and retail sectors, and has been responsible for extraordinary advancements in the poultry, seed, and dairy industries in Bangladesh and other countries.

As part of its partnership, Farming First has been working with the World Food Prize team to promote Sir Fazle’s selection and celebrate BRAC’s outstanding contribution to global food security in the media.
