Earlier this year, cases of undeclared horsemeat as well as traces of horse and pork DNA were found in beef products sold in the UK. Although the overall level of contamination has been small relative to the size of the market, alarmingly, there is evidence of fraud and criminal activity in food production/distribution across several EU Member States.
Against this background, the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee published its report into Contamination of Beef Products in February, with the Government outlining its response to the findings soon after.
Following the recent publication of the Select Committee’s Food Contamination Report in July, this special symposium provides a timely opportunity for local authorities, retailers, farmers, meat processors, food supply networks and other key stakeholders to discuss the recommendations and their ability to restore consumer confidence in the frozen and processed meat industry.
