Nominations Now Open for the 2022 World Food Prize

Nominations are now open for the 2022 World Food Prize – the prestigious $250,000 award that recognises outstanding contributions towards ending world hunger.

The Prize, which has been called the “Nobel Prize of food and agriculture”, is awarded annually to an individual whose achievements have helped increase the quantity, quality, availability of, or access to food – especially in relation to the Global South.

This year, the deadline for nominating candidates is May 1, with the World Food Prize Foundation especially encouraging nominations for women and individuals from the Global South.

Who is eligible?

Candidates can hail from any field, including the more traditional areas of plant and food science, but also sectors such as marketing, transportation or physical infrastructure. It is imperative that the nominee is able to showcase an outstanding achievement in strengthening food production or distribution for a large number of people.

In the past few years, Laureates have included soil scientist Dr. Rattan Lal, seed pioneer Simon N. Groot and nutrition champions Dr. Lawrence Haddad and David Nabarro.

With last year’s Award Ceremony held virtually due to Covid-19, Laureates are usually honoured at the annual Borlaug Dialogue in Des Moines, Iowa in the United States.

The nomination process

Since candidates cannot nominate themselves, it is up to their peers and colleagues to highlight their contributions and put them forward for the World Food Prize.

If you have a suitable candidate in mind to be the 2022 Laureate, you can learn more about the nomination process in one of the upcoming informational webinars being hosted by the World Food Prize Foundation.

There, you will be able to ask questions directly to the organisers before you submit your nomination.

Webinars will be held on March 24, with two timeslots available:

  • Time 1: 7am CDT / 3pm CAT
  • Time 2: 10am CDT / 6pm CAT

To register your place, send an email to [email protected] with your name, organisation, and which timeslot you would like to attend to secure your spot.
